Festive Memorial Day Desserts

Of course, getting a day off of work is a huge bonus to Memorial Day, but let us not forget the purpose of this holiday--to honor those who have served our nation and each of our liberties.

A day off of work gives us more time to be with our friends and family… preferably surrounded by a BBQ and tons of delicious food. To top off your Memorial Day BBQ, check out these festive Memorial Day Desserts that will make all of your friends and family feel extra patriotic.

1. Patriotic Trifle
This dessert includes the best of both worlds, delicious angel food cake sweetness and fresh summer berries. Oh yeah, and it’s super easy to make!


  • ¼ cup and ⅔ cup sugar

  • ¼ cup lemon juice, fresh

  • ¼ tsp almond extract

  • 1 angel food cake

  • 1 pound cream cheese

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 4 cups strawberries, sliced

  • 4 cups blueberries


  1. Stir ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup lemon juice and ¼ cup water in a saucepan over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and add the almond extract.

  2. Evenly brush both sides of the cake with this mixture. Then, cut the cake into bite size cubes.

  3. Put the remaining sugar and cream cheese into a bowl and beat until smooth. Then, add the cream and continue to beat until smooth.

  4. In a deep trifle dish, place half of the angel food cake cubes at the bottom. Then, layer in this order: blueberries, cream cheese mixture, strawberries, the rest of the angel food cake, blueberries, cream cheese mixture, strawberries then the rest of the blueberries.


2. Red, White and Blue Cupcakes
Not only are cupcakes easy to make, but they are already perfectly portioned! Check out this red velvet cupcake recipe with a patriotic twist.


Red Velvet Cupcakes:

  • 1 ⅓ cups cake flour

  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ¼ cup salted butter, softened + room temperature

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg, room temperature

  • ¼ cup canola oil

  • 1 tbsp liquid red food coloring

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp distilled white vinegar

  • ⅔ cup buttermilk, room temperature

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • 8 ounce package of cream cheese

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


  • Blue sprinkles, or blue M&Ms. Use whatever blue topping you prefer!


Cupcake Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. In a large bowl whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.

  3. In a separate mixing bowl, mix the butter and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and blend together. Then, add the oil, food coloring, vanilla and vinegar.

  4. Slowly, mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients in intervals separated by adding the buttermilk. After a few intervals, all ingredients should be mixed smoothly in one large bowl.

  5. Grab a muffin pan and add the cupcake liners. Fill each liner half way with the cupcake batter.

  6. Bake the cupcakes for 15-18 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool after baking.

Frosting Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl with a stand mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Then, add the butter and mix until smooth. Finally, add the sugar and vanilla extract until all ingredients are blended.

Decorating Directions:

  1. Once the cupcakes have cooled, pipe the cream cheese frosting on top. If you do not own a piping bag, simply stuff the frosting into a plastic Ziploc bag and cut a small hole at the corner to squeeze the frosting through.

  2. After the cupcakes are frosted, it’s time to pull the patriotic look together! Top off the cupcakes with blue sprinkles or blue M&M’s. Feel free to choose whichever one if your favorite!


3. American Flag Dipped Strawberries
Not a fan of rich cakes for dessert? Then, try this healthier option. These dipped strawberries are sure to be a hit while not adding too much sugar to your diet.


  • 1 pound strawberries

  • 1 bag of white chocolate melts, or white chocolate chips

  • 1 cup of confectioner’s sugar

  • 1 tbsp milk

  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup

  • Blue food coloring

  • Wax paper


  1. In a pot, simmer 1 inch water. Slowly, melt half the bag of white chocolate chips by adding them to the simmered water and placing a glass top on top of the pan. Once the chocolate chips are melted, take the top off, remove from heat and add the rest of the white chocolate chips. Stir until all the chocolate chips are melted.

  2. Dip the strawberries in the melted white chocolate chips and place on wax paper.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, milk, corn syrup and stir. Then, add the blue food coloring one drop at a time until you have reached your desired color.

  4. Place the blue glaze into a ziploc bag and cut a very small hole in the corner. Once the strawberries are completely dry, pipe the blue mixture over the strawberries in a drizzling back-and-forth motion.

  5. Let the strawberries dry, then serve!
